Kotweb contains the largest pool of student rooms in Antwerp. Register!

Having your own student flat means growing up and taking care of your own shit. It’s not obliged to officially register as an international student in a student flat with the city of Antwerp, but it is wise to do so. Like this, the emergency services can quickly check who’s in the building, in case of emergency.

Also, don’t forget to give your address to your educational establishment! This is important for the student administration.

Something else you will have to take care of, is sorting your trash. You can get information and sorting passes with our employees at GATE15. They are there for you!

Questions?

Got a pressing student flat question you cannot find on Kotweb? (Future) students of the Antwerp establishments can always get help from the Student Facilities Service of their university college or uni.

Quality questions? Both students and tenants can always apply for a quality investigation, free and via email.

For student flat inhabitants whose landlords do not provide a container, it’s important to know how the sorting streets work. The sorting streets are subterranean containers for your household waste. Above the ground, you can find insert pillars with a lid, which you can open with an A-card or a sorting pass. Pick up your sorting pass at GATE15. There are pillars for paper and cardboard, PMD (plastic bottles, metal packages and drinking cartons) and refuse remaining after separation of recyclable elements. Coming from abroad and want to live in Antwerp (temporarily)? Then you’re obliged to register at the aliens registration office and to ask for a residence permit. This procedure differs from EU/EER-students to non-EU/EER-students. You will need to provide your university college or university with the right documents. Therefore, first look for more information on the website of the International Office of your educational establishment.

As a student, you’re usually only allowed to sublet your room if your landlord has given you written permission beforehand. But if you get into an international exchange programme, or if you’re doing work training, you can sublet your room to another student without your landlord’s permission. This is valid for all contracts signed after 1 January 2019. Check Kotweb for more info.

Your landlord is never allowed to prematurely break your contract. That means your landlord cannot throw you and your belongings onto the street for no reason whatsoever. In any case, there will be house rules that you will need to respect and if you’re really, truly being a total pig, your dispute can even make it to court. This is valid for all contracts signed after 1 January 2019. Check

Kotweb for more info.

At all times, your rental bond can only be two months rent maximum (this is without taking into consideration your extra costs for water, energy and telecommunication). Your landlord cannot ask for your bond earlier than three months in advance. This is valid for all contracts signed after 1 January 2019. Check Kotweb for more info.

Good to know: at the end of the rental period, the tenant gets the bond and the interest back, unless there is damage or when you’re late in paying rent. The financial institution can only refund the bond with written proof. Is the bond in your landlord’s name? Then he needs to refund it within 3 months of his tenant’s departure.

THE TEAM’S TIP!

“Having trouble with your landlord? Every student in Antwerp has the right to get free mediation and legal assistance. Go and get more information at the International Office at your (college) university.”
